Great [Big] oaks from little acorns grow.
（大きなオークの木も小さなどんぐりから育つ）

Habit is (a) second nature.
（習慣は第2の天性である）

Half a loaf is better than none [no bread].
（パン半分でもないよりはまし）

Handsome is as handsome does.
（りっぱな行いの人は美しい；見目よりも心）
■ 後者の handsome は副詞的用法で handsomely（みごとに）の意。

He who hesitates is lost.
（ためらう者は機会を逃す）

He who laughs last laughs best.
= He laughs best who laughs longest.
（最後に笑う者が最もよく笑う；早まって喜ぶな）

He who pays the piper calls [may call] the tune.
（笛吹きに金を払う者が曲目を注文する；費用を払う者にその使い道の決定権がある）
■ piper 「笛吹き」「管楽器奏者」

Honesty is the best policy.
（正直は最善の策）

If the cap fits(, wear it).
（その帽子が自分の頭に合うならそれをかぶれ；そのことばが当たっているならすなおに受け入れなさい）
■ アメリカでは cap の代わりに shoe を用いることもある。

It is never too late to mend.
（行いを改めるには遅すぎるということはない）
■ 会話では to mend を省略することも多い。

It takes all sorts to make a world.
（世の中にはいろんな人がいるものだ；世は様々）
■ ここでの take は「必要とする」の意。all sorts は all sorts of people の意。

It takes two to tango.
（タンゴを踊るには2人が必要；1人ではできない、片方だけのせいではない）
